Samantha James Live Show Recap

Samantha James @ Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, Feb 4th!

samantha jamesOm Records’ singer-songwriter Samantha James played an early 7pm set at Hollywood’s Hotel Cafe last night. It was a good venue to see her in–a loungey bar vibe with an intimate feel. The crowd was modest but supportive–many of James’ family and friends were there. She played with a 4-piece band (keys, drums, percussion, guitar) alongside laptop manipulator The Southerner. James’ eclectic soulful electronic music was a perfect match for such a set-up. The set was maybe 45 minutes long and included “Rain” (a song written about her late mother that she dedicated to her recently passed father), “Angel Love”, “Rise”, “Breathe You In” and others.

James’ warm vocals were equally as engaging live as on record, and her natural charisma and genuine personality added to her stage presence. Perhaps the highlight of the show was the final song. In lieu of another track from her album, James opted for a live freestyle session. The band laid the impromptu groove and James sang free form over the top, showing her spontaneous creative chops. After the show she graciously mingled with the audience.

James is a real talent whose appeal goes far beyond “dance” music. Hopefully shows like this will help her attract a broad audience for her positive music.
