COOLY'S HOTBOX was born in a small liberal arts college named S.U.N.Y. (state university of NY) at purchase, about 30 minutes north of nyc in 1992. John Christian Urich, (aka Cooly) the Founder Drummer/singer and principal songwriter of Cooly's Hotbox wanted to put together an R+B project that would reflect a 70's sentiment based on strong songwriting and live musicianship. He met Angela Johnson and his dream began to come true. Angela, a multi talented instrumentalist and vocalist, and now a well recognized producer and songwriter, met Christian when they were singing together in the Gospel choir in college.
The most recent Cooly's Hotbox album, "DON'T BE AFRAID GET ON"(purpose records) is one of their best works to date including songs that have grabbed the publics attention, nationally and internationally. "Lose your friends" is the centerpiece in an sbcglobal.net commercial complete with visual clips of the band. "Maybe I" has been featured on "The KevinHill Show" and has been in regular rotation on Rafe Gomez's groove boutique, a program on cd 101.9s newly formatted internet radiostation" new york chill" "Are we lovers" has been in regular rotation for weeks on jazz FM in the UK. In addition the cuts "After life" ,"get on" , "don't be afraid", and "touch my body", have been getting major club play since the release of the album, by respected Djs around the world.
The History of Cooly's Hotbox is known to numerous fans who have supported their shows and requested their sound on the dance floor for many years. Backed by Christian's songwriting and his and Angela's powerful live performances, in 1994 Cooly's Hotbox were quickly recognized as heavyweight contenders and signed a deal with Payday/London/PolyGram Records. Their first release "Don't Throw My Love Around" was included on the 1994 Giant Step compilation followed by a number of singles in the late 90's on Sole Records including "We Don't Have to be Alone" and "Could You Love Me." Cooly's performed in major clubs around New York and toured the U.S., the U.K. and Japan before releasing their 2002 debut full-length album "Take It" on Dome Records in the U.K. and Higher Octave Records in the U.S. "Don't be afraid, get on" released in the US the UK and Japan, Features more of both Christian and Angela's songs, productions, collaborations, Lead vocal performances, two co-writes with bassist Justin Wallace, and a co-write with singer/songwriter Monet.
Bob Davis of soul patrol talks about COOLY's HOTBOX: "I have listened to this CD at least 4 times and each time at the end I always walk away with the same thought about this album and that is, it's kind of like ear candy for the masses. I haven't heard a cd like this for a while and it makes methink of some of the good stuff from the 1980's"
Both Christian and Angela have released many singles and branched off to produce, write, co-write remix and perform on many other quality projects over the span of their Careers. The list is big but to name a few, Angela has done projects with Maysa leak, reel people, Donnie, and Jimmy summers with Macy Gray. Christian has worked with DJ Spinna, Roger Sanchez, Osunlade, and Quentin Harris. Perhaps the most special however, are the albums they have put the most time into outside Cooly's Hotbox. "Introducing Tortured Soul" (purpose records) and "They don't know" and "get to let it go" (also both on purpose records). Introducing Tortured Soul is a soulful house album featuring More of Christian's songs productions and soulful vocals, and collaborations with bassist Jason Kriveloff and Keyboardist Ethan White. "Don't hold me down"(on introducing tortured soul) sounds like a happy track I'd wake up to saturday morning when the sun is coming through the window. I like the Roy Ayers feeling to it" -Lenny Kravitz ."Tortured Soul is breaking some rules and keeping me as a musician interested"-Barry Manilow The Desert Sun Palm springs CA. "They don't know" and "got to let it go" are Angela's stellar Freshman and sophmore works, inspired and influenced by many classic soul artists. Both albums feature her flexing all her songwriting, production, vocal and instrumental skill. "Perhaps not since the days of Patrice Rushen and Angela Winbush has a young (female) soul musician displayed so much ability" -Toledo city paper
2005 will definitely be the the strongest year yet for Cooly's Hotbox as they will be doing select dates in support of the "Don't be afraid get on" album, and continue to get requests for their appearances and music, from many fans, promoters, and entertainment industry taste makers. Angela will also appear on tour with her solo band, and Christian can be caught with Tortured Soul. They will be actively writing and producing on many new projects and collaborating with well known and underground artists. Keep a look out for Cooly's Hotbox and Angela and Christian's Recordings, live performances and appearances, on TV, radio, in clubs, and anywhere else the media exists. You will see them there...
